The top-selling single “What If God Was One Of Us” was released by Joan Osborne in 1995. The song reached the top 40 on the charts and was nominated for three Grammy awards.
The song’s words were heartwarming and encouraged listeners to rethink their perspectives on the world. The song made people think about how they treat others.
What if treating one another with more respect could lead to something life-changing? Casey Fischer’s life was changed forever when she followed the song’s directions and treated a stranger with kindness
A cup of coffee at her neighborhood Dunkin’ Donuts changed Fischer’s life forever. A homeless man was collecting spare change on the sidewalk. After watching him enter the building, she began counting his finds.
Upon talking to the man, she discovered he had just around a dollar in his pocket. Out of the goodness of her heart, she decided to buy him a beverage and a bagel for breakfast.
After Fischer made her decision, she asked the man to sit down and talk with her. He agreed.
During their conversation, she learned the homeless man’s name: Chris. Chris expressed his dissatisfaction with the way people treated him due to his homeless status.
Also, he talked openly about his drug addiction and how it transformed him into someone he didn’t recognize. Although he had lost his mother to cancer, he had always hoped to make her proud of him. Fischer and her teacher talked for nearly an hour before Fischer realized she was late for class. Chris told her to hold on a minute.
Chris scrawled something on an old receipt he handed to her before she left.
After apologizing for his sloppy calligraphy, he grinned and walked away. Fischer didn’t anticipate the touching message she would receive when she opened the note.
“Thanks to you, I don’t have to kill myself today,” the note continued. “Thank you, pretty lady.”
Who knew that sharing a bagel and a cup of coffee with a complete stranger would have such an impact on her life?
